As an NDIS participant you have the decision to make on how your funds will be managed. There are 3 options for this which are NDIA Managed, Plan Managed or Self Managed. At your planning meeting you can request for the planner to include "Improved Life Choices" Capacity Building Choice and Control into your plan. This provides you the funding required to engage with a Plan Manager. You can nominate to have certain areas of your plan managed by a Plan Manager to allow for more flexibility on how the funds can be spent, meaning you then have the option to use non registered providers as well as registered providers which in turn gives you greater choice!
There are a variety of Plan Managers in the market from your small Bookkeeper, accounting firms providing this service alongside their main core business, disability agencies also providing this service in addition to their core business and then you have plan managers who only provide this type of service to NDIS participants, this is what we call an "Independent Plan Manager". Using an independent plan manager can be more beneficial in reducing any risk of conflict of interest on their part.
When it comes time to decide on your Plan Manager we suggest that you assess what type of business they are, investigate what other services they are offering to ensure their main focus is on plan management, read reviews by their clients and also ask questions via discussion groups etc which is a great source to find out if people are happy with the services they are receiving. We would also suggest asking the Plan Manager their turn around times for payment of accounts as this also ensures continuity of support for you. Having unpaid accounts could cause problems in receiving supports from your providers.
